Side Door News is a weekly read on nonlinear careers, technology, AI, and building something outside your 9 to 5. Written by someone who sent more than 2,000 applications, got zero offers, and got in anyway.

Tailor the resume. Grow the network. Follow up politely. It is not bad advice. It is advice written for people the system was already built for, and when it does not work, the answer is always to try harder at it.
Apply, wait, optimize the resume again. Two hundred applications into the void this year, and the only feedback loop is silence.
People without the target school, the network, or the uncle who knows a guy. Also people who look fine on paper and can feel the ladder does not go anywhere they want to be.
Careers get built through the cold message that landed and the side project that quietly became the job. Nobody writes that part down. This does.
The Difference
Submit through the portal and wait for a system to notice you.
Rewrite the resume a sixth time for a keyword filter.
Grow the network by adding strangers who never reply.
Compete with four hundred people for one posted role.
Send the message nobody asked you to send, to the person who can actually decide.
Build the thing in public so the work argues for you before you speak.
Turn a side project into proof, then into income, then into leverage.
Walk into a role that was never posted, because you made it obvious you should.
EVERY ISSUE
No filler, no motivational posting. One post most weeks, sent when there is something real to hand over.
Real interviews about how people actually got in. Not the LinkedIn version, the version with the awkward first message still attached.
What building without a playbook looks like from the inside, with honest numbers and the mistakes left in.
The questions that keep coming back: visibility and personal branding, building outside the 9 to 5, and getting seen without a network.
How to actually operate the tools, including Claude Code, written as notes and tutorials rather than tool announcements.
Generalist-friendly job boards, courses, and resources at CareerGeneralist.com, kept current instead of published once and abandoned.
Reply to any issue and it reaches Mike directly. The stuck points readers send in shape what gets covered next.

The Writer
I applied to more than 2,000 jobs and got zero offers. No target school, no built-in network, immigrant parents who worked hard but could not make introductions. I kept doing the right things long past the point where it was obvious they were not built to work for someone like me.
So I stopped lining up at the front door. Everything since came through side doors, including launching beverages at Anheuser-Busch and my role at State Street. Along the way I worked across enough fields that recruiters called me unfocused. The mix turned out to be the asset.
The playbook for people without the playbook mostly does not exist. So I'm writing it.
Now I run The Civic Pulse, a nonpartisan civic media and portfolio company I built from scratch as a solo founder, and I'm building Side Door News the same way everything else on my resume happened. Without permission.
